How to Share Reproducible Data
Sunday, 6 September, 19:00 - 20:00 Hall 1
The rapid growth of the biosciences necessitates scaleable and reliable mechanisms to select, validate, archive, share and find research. The peer reviewed research paper remains the predominant mode of sharing research findings and journals play important roles also as a proxy for quality and impact in research assessment. In times of funding constraints, the pressures to publish in a subset of journals increase.
The session will discuss the challenges this poses on the publication process, including the role journals play in supporting research ethics. We will highlight measures that journals have taken or should take to ensure that peer-reviewed publication optimally aids research progress and that it remains a hallmark of a reliable and self-correcting scientific process, focusing in particular on EMBO’s transparent process, which ensures fast, fair and informed editorial decisions with full accountability. The session will also discuss new approaches to enhance the reproducibility and discoverability of research data. EMBO's Source Data project is recasting the paper as a rich online resource that allows researchers to discover, reproduce and share research data effectively. The publication of validated source data with associated reagents, methods and authorship in journals and repositories and enhanced editorial screening procedures ensure transparency, reproducibility and accountability in the reporting of scientific research.

He carried out postdoctoral research at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Toronto, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle and at the University of Innsbruck. Bernd was associate and then senior editor at Nature from 1999 until 2002 and subsequently chief editor of Nature Cell Biology. He joined EMBO in 2009 as chief editor of The EMBO Journal and Head of Scientific Publications.
